Mental health problems of children and adolescents are different from adults. In order to assess and diagnose mental health problems of children and adolescent, besides symptoms, adults should pay attention to the following 3 aspects:

+ First, the development context is of great importance to children. Normal behaviors in young children can be a sign of serious mental disorders at a later age.

+ Family education environment, parents' educational style greatly affects the symptoms and behavior of children. These are leading factors that cannot be ignored when diagnosing and planning support plan for the child. For example: A child is more likely to face mental health problems when he/she has an alcoholic parent or develops in a violent family environment ...

+ Finally, children often do not have the cognitive ability and language to describe their problems correctly. To accurately assess a child's problem, psychiatrists and clinical psychologists have to observe and work directly with the child. They also need information from others such as parents, teachers.

In many cases, developmental and behavioral problems (for example, poor academic performance, slow language acquisition, poor social skills) are difficult to distinguish from problems related to mental disorders. In such cases, intellectual development test and neurological tests are considered as a criterion to be included in the evaluation process.

Parents can easily detect signs of mental health problems through behavioral emotional changes of their children such as:

+ Lack of sleep or sleep anytime and anywhere, always sleepy
+ Loss of appetite, anorexia or uncontrollable overeating
+ Lack of energy or moodiness
+ Complaining of nausea, abdominal pain or headache
+ Change of mood, mood swing, getting angry for no reason
+ Anxiety everywhere, anytime
+ Academic results poorer than normal
+ Concentration difficulty
+ Avoiding contact with relatives and friends
